Review of Murmur of the Heart (1971) by Ron H — 14 Dec 2007
After seeing Au Revoir Les Enfants and Black Moon, I was not exactly blown away by Louis Malle. They were good movies, but they just didn't grab me with brilliance like this movie did. This guy understands adolescent boys more than anyone I've seen who makes movies.
The setting of 1950's France is interesting, but the story is about these boys and how they act. The relationship between the Laurent and his mother is hypnotic and fascinating. What Malle does with this movie is unexpected and would be laughed off anywhere else, but he handles it brilliantly.
It makes perfect sense in this world with these people. This is just an all around brave (I know that's clichéd) and honest flick.
