Review of Murder Party (2007) by Dan H — 14 Oct 2016
In this dark comedy, a normal loser discovers an invitation to a Halloween "Murder Party". Intrigued, he decides to attend only to discover that the hosts (also losers) intend on murdering him.
Luckily, they're inept amateurs. The film takes a long time to get going (a good 50 minutes until the slaughter really begins), but there is a good deal of murder and bloodshed in the last act of it.
Unfortunately, the film is pretty boring and slow for most of its run time, though there is a fair deal of funny material here. Macon Blair, Chris Sharp, and Alex Barnett are the best actors here. While it's fairly uneven and nowhere near as cool and fun as it's title or poster would suggest, in the end Murder Party is entertaining enough for me to give it a recommendation.
It's every bit as depressing as Saulnier's other films, just in different ways.
