Review of Murder on the Orient Express (2017) by Michael H — 19 Feb 2018
My only complaint would be that the murder takes a back seat to the inspector's struggle to solve the murder. This emphasis on the inspector wouldn't be a problem except that he doesn't really have a well-developed character arc and seems to be almost the same person he was at the movie's start.
That being said, if a movie's purpose is to steal us away from reality and wrap us in a warm blanket of storytelling, then "Murder on..." succeeded. I truly felt transported to the past where I was given a glimpse into the lives of these people.
Some truly wonderful long camera shots dazzled me from time-to-time, and I was glad to be treated to bright colors that popped off the screen instead of dark colors, hiding everything in shadow and mystery.
I went into this movie having never seen the original and having never read the book. I wanted a good mystery that would have me guessing and working out the clues without too many twists, and all my expectations were exceeded.
