Here's the film that started my obsession with noir many years ago. Dmytryk in the director's seat, Dick Powell coming out of left-field (like MacMurray in Double Indemnity) as Philip Marlowe, and one of the smartest scripts in the genre.
And I'm not afraid to say that Powell made an even better Marlowe than Bogart.
