Review of Murder by Death (1976) by Victor P — 09 Mar 2009
A frequently overlooked comedy gem of a spoof/murder mystery. This Neil Simon script takes a pocketful of the well-known detective characters of fiction, twists them slightly, and plonks them all down into a generic 'Spooky House-Invited Dinner-Murder Ensues' theme.
What stands it apart from other spoofs of this genre is the first-rate cast and the ease with which they inhabit their roles. It's not quite as funny as it tries to be but it more than makes up for that with some great acting, some odd side-swipes, and a labyrinth plot that confuses and intrigues.
Avoid the poor 'sequel' where Peter Falk reprises his Sam Spade character.
