Review of Murder by Death (1976) by Aj V — 29 Dec 2010
Goofball, slapstick spoof of the Agatha Christie murder-mystery genre, replete with hilariously over-the-top acting by some of Hollywood's biggest comic hams of the time as parodies of classic film sleuths, here clearly having a field day.
Jam-packed with some wacky set-pieces, corny, unsophisticated humor, smutty jokes, & some really inspired casting (Peter Falk, Elsa Lanchester, Peter Sellers, & James Coco in particular-), although wheezing, lisping, mincing Truman Capote is a little hard to take after a while, & you're relieved after he's bumped off! Alec Guinness and Nancy Walker contribute fun bits as the blind butler and the deaf cook, and ancient comic character actress Estelle Winwood is amusing as Miss Marble's (Lanchester) wheelchair-bound and flatulent nurse in her last film role.
