Review of Munich (2005) by Gary P — 09 Aug 2009
A film that will split opinons for longer than one may want to consider. That in itself may or may not be part of Spielberg's intentions, despite his rather sheepish disclaimers. On the picture front itself, his direction is crisp, brittle, laden with a stomach churning paranoia that seperates individuals from the collective ideology.
For all of Meir's triumphalism there are the nasty underhand executions that leave bystanders maimed or traumatised, something Speilberg does not shy away from, not that it makes him any more heroic for doing so.
Possibly the closest a mainstream Hollywood director will get to presenting a "balanced" view on the events of 1972 and the wider implications, it is a flawed project, although not completely for all the wrong reasons, and not for all the right ones either.
