Review of Munich (2005) by Sean K — 08 Jul 2012
Spielberg's companion to Schindler's List, and his most underrated film. Israeli-Palestinian relations are characterized by misconception and resentment. Munich is a singular achievement because it manages to consider both the post-Holocaust mindset of Israel and the plight of oppressed Palestinians.
Spielberg's touch is delicate as he watches his characters cope with the seemingly endless cycle of violence between the two peoples. He does not condemn them as they fire upon each other. But he is saddened, and so are we.
Will this sadness drive the peoples into a more permanent peace? Assassin Avner Kaufman, beautifully portrayed by Eric Bana, hopes so. However, the pain seared into his eyes is a stark reminder that such a path is arduous and complex.
Critics of Middle Eastern affairs would do well to note that fact.
