Review of Mum & Dad (2008) by Private U — 09 May 2009
An impressive debut from Steven Sheil, although not wholly original in it's concept or execution. "Mum and Dad" delivers more in the way of feeling unconmfortable and in some respects grossed out by what you the viewer or should that be "voyeur" is witnessing on screen as any actual scares are non existent.
The films influences and inspirations are worn clearly on it's sleeve, think along the lines of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and a far less glossy hollywood style "Hostel". The fact that the film was made for a paltry £100,000 works in it's favour as there is a lot more to appreciate here than in some bigger budget hollywood "gore-porn" movies.
All in all a blackly comic and disturbing British indie horror.
