Review of Mulholland Dr. (1999) by James O — 23 Jun 2011
At first this is hard to grasp. It soon becomes apparent this film is a dream/fantasy, weird convoluted script underneath which lies the real message. Its really the story of a girl who comes to Hollywood who dreams of making it big.
A sexually confused episode within some pseudo dreamworld is intertwined with real world jealousy towards a succesfull actress. It's difficult to see where reality starts and where the dream ends which makes this really interesting to watch.
The idea that making it big in hollywood is determined by connections rather than talent and the portrait of failed actresses working as waitresses across Hollywood's cafes, may ring true. Hard to say but that appears to be the tenet of the film.
The opera singing scene emphasises the sad misfortune of Naomi Watts dilema. Also, great lesbian scenes, Naomi Watts is hot and talented. Great news.
