Review of Mulholland Dr. (1999) by Rick Q — 04 Apr 2012
David lynch films are just weird for the sake of weird. i've seen "mulholland drive" twice now. I hated it the first time, but decided to see it again, in case I missed something that would make it as special as many people claim it to be.
after the second viewing, I feel I understand the story completely, but there are so many holes and too many coincidences for me to be able to buy into it. the film even tries to trick you towards the end that it's actually going somewhere and trying to make a point, but then the ending happens and you realize it's not.
it's not just the lack of a point that makes the film so hard to sit through. the dialogue is often redundant and corny as hell, and just about everything the characters do is unbelievably dumb. obviously i'm not a fan of lynch's, but every film of his that i've seen, i've watched with an open mind, but I find his work, particularly this film and "inland empire", to be nothing more than pretentious dribble.
