Review of Mulholland Dr. (1999) by Brandon T — 09 Oct 2011
So this was what was going through my head while watching this:
"Hmm, pretty random start; maybe its significance will become clear later on in the film. Hot girl. Ooo. Did Naomi Watts really look like that 10 years ago? That dude looks creepy. WHY IS EVERYTHING SO MYSTERIOUS?!! The music is always so eerie, the suspense is too much to handle; there better not be anything popping out on screen or I'm gonna get a heart attack. Billy Ray Cyrus is in this? Who is this cowboy? This guy is speaking in such profound sentences, what does it mean? Everything is so mysterious, what is this leading to?!! [Then] Whoa, Whoa, oh. WHOA, WHAT?! Holy cr-what the h-isn't she her and isn't she h-what on earth?! I bet everything is going to come together in the end... [Silencio.]".
Everything was so mysterious. There is obviously lots going on in the last bit. I had no idea what happened (though there was no trouble following the first two thirds of the film), and still had no idea after watching it. Only after reading some articles did the general gist of it seem clear. Note that this film is open-ended and is up for lots of interpretations. And there are probably lots of cryptic messages and symbolism in this too. I honestly can't be bothered going too deeply into it. (I've only spent two or three hours trying to find answers.).
If you're too lazy to read all this, putting it blankly: Mulholland Drive is mindfk.
