Review of Mulholland Dr. (1999) by Jackson L — 01 Mar 2013
Well, I don't know if it's as good as previous Lynch films like Eraserhead, but it does have an interesting plot that for 3/4 of the film ACTUALLY makes sense. (unlike most other Lynch films) But after 3/4, things go all Lynchian and stop making sense, but not in an interesting way like Eraserhead. It's kind of like Lynch is on autopilot for the last part. Like suddenly he just said to himself,.
"Oh I forgot, time to stick on a surrealist ending!" It's just nonsensical, but unlike other Lynch films, not really in a good way.
What I'm trying to say is, the ending is a very generic "Lynch ending." Aside from the ending though, I did quite like the rest of the film, though I couldn't help but laugh when the Cowboy showed up with his eyebrow-less face, and when the woman was crying profusely, and then suddenly the camera pans down and reveals she's been masturbating all along.
In short, it's a good film, but not as good as other Lynch films. See Blue Velvet to get a better ending for a Lynch plot and Erasrerhead for an all out surrealist dreamscape.
