Review of Mulholland Dr. (1999) by Nickolas I — 18 Mar 2014
I love surrealism, let me start off by saying that. Un Chien Andalou, the paintings of Salvador Dali, and even Lynch's own Lost Highway are in my opinion some of the greatest works of art to be released.
I just don't like it when it's thrown in at the last minute like in Mulholland Drive. It's an outstanding mystery film for about an hour and a half, and if it had stayed that way, then I would consider this to be one of my personal favorites and one of the most atmospheric and well-directed films ever made since 2001: A Space Odyssey.
However, about ten minutes before the ending, a weird twist involving a box and what I think might be a parallel universe happens and it feels as if Lynch just got bored writing it and decided to use the ending to a different movie instead (the actors are literally playing different characters with different names and different personalities, the plot goes from a missing identity noir to a lesbian love story, and there's an incoherent mythology thrown in for the hell of it).
Perhaps if I saw it again, I might see what Lynch is going for, but at this moment, it just seems lazy and incoherent.
