Review of Mulholland Dr. (1999) by Frank R — 13 Jan 2015
After viewing Mulholland Drive for the second time, something like 10 years after the first viewing, it does not seem as confusing this time. I have been a fan since Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks. This time it seems that the film has scenes which should have been edited out, such as the man who had the two dreams, the thug who shoots several people, the Silencio segment, plus some shorter other unnecessary scenes.
It should have been pared down to the parallel lesbian love stories. The blue box, and the blue keys are symbols without reference points within the two love stories. Frankly, I found some of it silly, the Cowboy, the spooky looking homeless fellow behind Winkies' cafe, who somehow winds up with the blue box.
The first time I saw this film I was left with a creepy sense of unease because of the sight of Diane Selwyn's corpse. That scene really freaked me out. This time I was left with s profound sense of sadness at the fate of the young Canadian actress whose Hollywood dream becomes an unbearable nightmare.
