Review of Mulberry Street (2006) by Brendan T — 30 May 2008
Some aspects of this film screamed B-grade, which when mixed with horror, is almost always a recipe for disaster. I wouldn?t go as far as to say the whole movie was B-grade though. The way it was filmed was very B-grade, yet the acting and situation seemed average to just above average. So the premise is set in Manhattan, rats have started to bite people more frequently and once you are bitten, you start experiencing a fever and dizziness and gradually you grow more hair and your bone structure on your face starts to change to that of a rat. The story follows an almost condemned apartment building of people as they live (and die) through the experience and try to protect themselves from an island of mutated people who want to eat them.
I couldn?t help but feel that what made the movie good at the start was lost around halfway through due to the over-the-top changes made in the appearance of the bitten. The director did the right thing with creating the suspenseful and nerve-racking atmosphere in the city. The soundtrack was also very well done. Not the typical eerie soundtrack music that plays whenever something scary could happen but instead stuff like Animal Collective, Blood on the Wall and The Walkmen.
