Review of Mulan (2020) by Zkl — 04 Sep 2020
Another disappointing soulless remake with half-hearted nods to the nostalgia of the much better animated original for its emotional beats. weak superhero-esque splendor trying to be something empowering yet ending up lazy and hollow.
a movie with jarring editing trying to be more realistic yet has a unrealistic wooden protagonist with little depth and literal superpowers. I find it hard to imagine anyone who can relate to a magical person born with extraordinary unearthly talent far superior than their peers, whos main struggle is to just use their potential.
Not learning to get better, not working or training, but to not hold back their physical prowess. This internal struggle of a demigod is sadly not even that well executed of a journey. if this being is so powerful why does another equally powerful shapeshifter need to sacrifice themselves against a measly arrow.
makes no sense. donnie yen's character was also the only one who looked like they could actually fight. I was so excited and hopeful after seeing the trailer, but this lacks the spirit and emotion that was so integral to the animated version.
ex the decision to take the place of her father was such a powerful moment in the original, but in the modern remake it just happens. so many things "just happen" for the sake of happening. This movie is virtually inferior in every aspect when compared to the og.
watered down, "safe", and sad.
