Review of Mulan (1998) by James S — 14 Jul 2014
A wonderful inversion of the classic Disney princess. Not only is our main character female, but she is also of the common folk, making her an excellent role model for the youngins. The narrative does a great job of balancing tradition with independence. Mulan is constantly caught in conflicts familiar to many of us: old vs new, male vs female, and obedience vs freedom.
The songs are not as memorable as other Disney compositions, although "I'll Make a Man out of You" certainly hits on some excellent notes. Similarly, the voice acting is merely solid (with the exception of Eddie Murphy as Mushu the dragon, who really knocks it out of the park).
The film works fine as entertainment, but is excellent to teach lessons to younger viewers. It increases cultural awareness, teaches us to strike a balance in our lives, and rewards commitment.
