Review of Mulan (1998) by Lymara A — 07 Aug 2011
Mulan is a Disney movie that I almost forgot how dear it is to me. Sure I loved it before as a child, but watching it again now, Mulan is one of my all time favorites.
I've been getting a bit lazy to write my reviews nowadays because well, I'm been lazy, sue me.
Now to continue on:
Animation/Coloring: What can I say? It's a Disney movie, the animation to this movie is as spectacular & beautifully done as it should be. And the coloring is beautifully done as well.
Plot/Story: The story is of Fa Mulan, a young girl who does not know what her true purpose is in life, & then decides to take on the dangerous task of going to war for her father, which takes tremendous courage to do. In this era, girls may find it offensive how the sexism is involved, but that's how it was back then. It involves the themes of honor & family, & what a great job it does at it. Many can learn something from this beautifully plotted movie.
Characters: The characters are all lovable & played by a tremendous cast. Mulan is the main character & hero of this story. She proves that a women can do anything a man can & as well teach younger girls how to be both beautiful & tough at the same time, and just a quick FYI, Mulan is NOT a princess; she was not the daughter of an emperor nor married a prince. Mushu, played by the great & hilarious Eddie Murphy, is the typical Disney hero/heroin side kick, & the comedic relief of the story. Eddie Murphy is a true genius playing this part. And the funny yet sad part is, Mushu was originally supposed to have his own song in this movie, 7 I wish I could have seen & heard it in here, because if any of you have watched Dreamgirls, then you know how much of a talented singer Murphy really is.
Law & Order SVU's B.D. Wong plays Shang, a spirited, & heroic hero who wants to show how worthy he & his men are to fight. He's tough, & is also the 'pretty boy' of the story. Then we have the other comedic friend characters, Yao, Ling, & Chien Po. And we finally have the villain, Shan-Yu. One of Disney's most sinister, & scariest villains. Just looking into those pitch black eyes of his transfer fear into you.
Music/Score: The songs in this movie are truly amazing & well written, & are memorable in every way. My two favorites have to be "Reflection", & "I'll make a man out of you". The score in this movie is not my all time favorite, but it's beautifully composed & matches the movie's theme perfectly,. However, the music when Mulan decides to change into her father's armor is epic. Sorry for using that raped word.
Finaly summation, Mulan is a true Disney classic that can teach morals, & is beautifully done. One of my all time favorite Disney movies.
