Review of Mulan (1998) by Hayden M — 30 Jul 2013
Possibly one of the best constructed Disney films in the entire canon. Beautifully drawn, wonderfully humorous, and always thrilling, Mulan is a clean-cut and endearing cinematic experience. The film is a triumph due to its eye-candy and its extremely likable characters.
This may in fact be a first for a Disney film---no character talks too much or too little. Each character has his or her own purpose, and no character is ever obnoxious or unnecessary. The plot is well conceived, and the writing is solid.
The songs are strong enough (most notably "True to Your Heart" and "Reflection" which are played in the credits), and overall the story is charming and enjoyable. Mulan also succeeds at keeping an even pace and an even tone---deftly balancing humor with action.
This flawlessness--and the epic power of the film---are also a result of some breathtaking scenes within the film: the opening, Mulan's transformation sequence (which is stunning and brilliant), the fight on the mountain, and the climax.
Bravo Disney! This film will surely stand the test of time as an animated classic, especially due to its powerful story. Too bad they don't make animated films like this one anymore. Mulan will forever stand as Disney's last film of such a high caliber.
