A resonant meditation on boyhood, love, and loyalty, Mud brings you in at the very beginning and doesn't let go. Under the deft direction of Jeff Nichols, rural Arkansas looks and feels as isolated and wild as it would in the days of Tom Sawyer.
Particularly in the midst of a solid supporting cast, it is hard to say who delivers the more convincing performance; McConaughey as the titular, eccentric Mud, or Tye Sheridan as the impressionable yet dauntless Ellis.
