Review of Mrs. Henderson Presents (2005) by Stephen R — 25 Jul 2007
This was just my weekend for unexpectedly great movies. Out of three movies I ended up seeing this weekend without expecting it I get one four star movie and two five star movies.
This is the first of my two five star movie reviews and both definitely deserve it.
This movie based on real events in the 1930s following a recently widowed lady who, to help pass the time, buys a theatre. After the theatre starts to lose money, she decides to put on a nude show. The movie follows Mrs. Henderson and her theatre troupe in their struggle to to keep the show going on during the bombing of London by the Nazis.
The movie is extremely well-acted and the story is compelling. This was not a movie I would have picked myself to watch but I am glad I did. The movie was so well done, and for her performance Judi Dench earned herself an Oscar nomination.
This movie shows real life during the second World War and the height of the blitz. The movie shows how London struggled on with life during a horrific time; while the Theatre tries to keep up the moral of the troops and the people of London.
This moving masterpiece is a film that everybody should watch at least once. The film handles the nudity extremely well and it is not done in a tasteless way. I think the only member of the cast who is not naked at some point is Judi Dench. Even Bob Hoskins strips down in one of the movie's funniest scenes.
The movie, while a drama, shows the humor in the situations and in some parts is laugh out loud funny. Please take the time to see this movie. It is a great independent film that should be supported.
