Review of Mrs Brown (1997) by John D — 13 Jul 2008
Another "Indie" flick that boils down to classy actors making up for the damage done by underground hype. Connolly could always be depended on to produce the goods in his rare TV/movie appearances prior to this, although never quite as scintillating.
Judi Dench can muster up memorable performances as second nature, so the screen essentially becomes a battle of wits between two stubborn middle aged chalk and cheese types, something John Madden may have intially feared, but certainly can't complain about in hindsight.
Shame Connolly hasn't really built on this, instead becoming somewhat stodgy and nasty as he enters the Autumn of his life. Dench on the other hand, goes from strenght to strenght.
