Review of Mr. Turner (2014) by David B — 04 Jan 2015
I know this is getting a mixed response but I fall into the camp of those who enjoyed it. Yes, it's a bit of an old-fashioned, episodic biopic, and it probably could have been a little shorter (though some themes could have been explored in more depth).
But as a portrait of an artist for whom it was all about the light, the film captures that obsession beautifully. I loved that Turner was portrayed as constantly distracted by what the light was doing.
As someone happy to go to any length to capture a scene 'just so'. Who was always looking 'out'. Today he probably would have been a photographer. Spall is excellent. I feel I have a better understanding of what drove Turner, and surely that's the main aim of a picture of this genre.
