Review of Mr. Turner (2014) by N M — 15 Nov 2015
Beautifully acted and photographed but 2 1/2 hours of grunting gets to be a bit much. Was hoping the movie would focus primarily on his revolutionary painting style. Learning about his relationships was interesting but ultimately we felt the movie was too sketchy on both fronts.
We found that the incredible attention to detail and the brilliant casting were the aspects of the film that held our attention. But even there, it was frustrating to watch the housekeeper's skin condition and health deteriorate without knowing what she was afflicted with - was it exzema or a symptom of a disease? For all the attention to detail, there was a huge amount of historical information left out that today's viewer simply wouldn't be able to decipher without some explanation.
Dorothy Atkinson deserves an Oscar nomination.
