Lovely scenes of the English countryside/seaside. Timothy Spall provides a superb portrayal of the crude, grunting title character. And oh what an unattractive character he is. This film does not provide a better understanding of his work or the impact of his work.
It is about a very unattractive individual who just happened to have been a great painter. The painting is almost peripheral. Most characters would not have been out of place in a Monty Python sketch.
Yes, the acting was that broad, that schticky. The talented Mr. Leigh made a major misstep with this over-long bio-pic.
