Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by Joe L — 23 Dec 2008
The key to capra's success seems to come from a couple factors: 1. cast jimmy stewart as your idealistic everyman. 2. throw as much cynicism as you possibly can at him. capra makes him suffer as much as possible - because we can't help but see ourselves in him, and because he is both so humanly weak and yet strong enough to persevere, we find hope in watching him struggle through the worst circumstances.
capra used him to inspire us, and hitchcock used him to terrify us.
