Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by Jose M — 17 Mar 2012
A landmark in classic cinema that features one of the most tremendous performances in the history of film by the legendary Jimmy Stewart. His struggle against the political machine is played out like Cervantes' Quixote, a battle filled with much adversity, but in the end, a very upbeat Capra-esque ending.
This is without a doubt Capra's boldest film, that in spite of it's sensationalistic take on the political arena, is still controversial for it's unprecedented take on politics. Claude Rains's performance as the corrupt senator is an iconic supporting role; simply unforgettable.
I'm usually not big on classic Hollywood, but this is just too great of a film to miss out on.
