Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by Alex S — 27 Oct 2012
What a great movie to see in election season, no? Interestingly enough, Jean Arthur's fast-talking, jaded secretary, in a long line of savvy 30s dame reads more as a the audience surrogate and main character of the piece than Jimmy Stewart's impossibly naive boy scout.
Don't call it unrealistic or didactic, this is American myth-making, in pure populist Capra style.
