Review of Mr. Holmes (2015) by Robert B — 12 Jan 2016
It's okay, if unremarkable.
It's a very slow burner with not much payoff. It's really an observation into old age rather than a detective story. Personally I don't mind that but I don't think I'll ever feel the compulsion to watch this again.
McKellen puts in a good performance for about 80% of the film, but other times he really hams it up. I think he's exhausted every variant of an "old man groan".
It's quaint and well made, but not particularly memorable.
