Review of Mr. Holland's Opus (1995) by Mikhail B — 10 Jul 2012
The script writer probably wanted to fit into this film everything he ever knew, experienced, or wanted to experience; also, he squeezed in extracts from all of his favourite films, his father's personal opinion on the country's educational system and its financing, he used this opportunity to voice his apologies to own children, born and unborn, for not being a good father, his view on the political events in the United States in the last few decades.
He didn't actually mean anything wrong, he just wanted to deliver the underlying message, that all of it, everything that happened in Mr. Holland's life was his 'opus', the life composed it for him, it's a certain opposition to the common view that a man should be the master of his destiny, and he should do what he thinks he should, but his case, apparently, wasn't the case.
But with too many messages, the main message is blurred, and there you have it, it's 2:20 including 20 minutes of congratulatory addresses during the eye-itching farewell party is of one of the the dullest film ever.
