Review of Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) by James M — 20 Mar 2010
I'm a big fan of old classics, and I understand Capra's enthusiasm about the American dream, but it just doesn't sit well with me - maybe it wouldn't with him, either, if he was to live here now.
I find it particularly disturbing about the story that the hero would suddenly be so willing to lie down to all the slander, and then turn around just as suddenly. A little naive in dramatics, I'd say (though sure, what do you expect from 1936, and especially in this part of the world).
And to be truthful, Cooper does look like a sap most of the time.
