Review of Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) by Samantha B — 14 Jul 2007
A sweet movie, infinitely better than the Adam Sandler remake. Gary Cooper in his usual Everyman role, and Jean Arthur (as in Mr. Smith) as a world-weary career woman whose hard exterior is melted by a small-town simpleton's basic decency. And the little guy champions over stuffy businessman plot fits in perfectly with the 1936 New Deal attitude.
Still, I like Mr. Deeds less than certain of the other "classic" Capra films. Maybe it's the ridiculous ending. Or maybe it just pales in comparison to the similarly named Mr. Smith. Regardless, I think this is the quintessential Capra film, even if not the best.
