Review of Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) by Adrian B — 09 May 2011
Though it doesn't rank as one his best films, Frank Capra's "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" is a nice, touching film. The story follows the title character (Gary Cooper) who has inherited a vast fortune from his late uncle.
He also inherits the job of congressman and is consistently critisized and harassed by his new co-workers and many others, specifically the press. One worker (Jean Arthur) of the press begins to investigate Mr.
Deeds quite closely, want dig dirt on the man but at the same time, starts to fall in love with him. The film's overall effect is marred by time, but it is still a nice film. There are some laughs and a lot of charm.
The chemistry between Arthur and Cooper is also pretty good. Another likable film by Capra.
