Review of Mr. Deeds (2002) by Harry D — 13 Feb 2013
I don't know what Mr. Deeds is a remake of, but whatevee this is, I like it.
Adam Sandler doesen't play a massive idiot this time, so relying more on his physical humour turns out to be a thing that works in Mr. Deeds.
The Always Marvelous Winona Ryder gives a great performance as well, despite being provided with a weak character she still manages to maintain a level of sweetness that works well. She especially works well in the later scenes.
The other standouts are the comedic support from John Turturro and Conchata Ferrell in small but funny parts, and the usual Rob Schneider and Steve Buscemi cameos.
Although Mr. Deeds does not have the strength of a well written screenplay or clever premise, it does satirize the media industry so much that it points out to the audience what kinds of grip it has on society.
Mr. Deeds is really aimed more at big fans of Adam Sandler and little kids, and since i'm a fan of Sangler I really enjoyed it. Plus, I love Winona Ryder and even a trial for kleptomania couldn't stop her from being a good actress at the time Mr. Deeds was made.
So although it doesen't reach the same amount of humour as some of Adam Sandler's better films, it's still good for a laugh.
