Review of Mr. Church (2016) by Robert A — 24 Mar 2017
I've read what the critics have to say, especially the parts about old negro stereotypes in this film. I feel they're hiding behind their own stereotypes, by essentially typecasting Eddie Murphy.
Meaning, if he isn't entertaining us with some cool jokes and groovy repartee, he isn't any good in a movie. He was exceptional, actually. His character was very understated, but Eddie carried it superbly.
I also learned something very valuable about myself by watching this film. I am like Mr. Church in that I can do pretty much all the things he does and more. And I do them all very well. I find people forever being intimidated by me as if my skills somehow take something away from them.
I think Eddie is also superb at many things, including the ones his character showed. The critics are guilty of the same things they're criticizing. Superb cast, sad at many times, but a beautiful period piece!
