Many have stated that the movie would have been better if narrated from the point of view of Mr Church and that the film took a spark from Eddie Murphy. It's also been stated that many didn't care for how Charlie's problems were "miraculously resolved" all the time.
This story isn't about Mr. Church even though his name is the title. The story is about the difference one person can make on the life of another. For Henry Church, it was the difference a family made in his life. For Marie it was knowing that her daughter would be taken care of after her death. For Eddie Larson it was a single little girl who befriended an alcoholic and happened to be in the right place at exactly the right time. For Poppy, it knowing that no matter what, she had 1 true friend who knew every thing about her and was willing to knock her back down to earth any time her ego got to big. For Charlotte it was Mr. Church being the father she never had nor knew she wanted.
The story is about friendship. Not just between a white girl and her black cook, but about the impact each of these people had on each other's lives. If it hadn't been for Henry Church, Charlotte may have grown up to be just like her friend Poppy. If it hadn't of been for Charlotte, Mr Church would have lived and died alone with no friends and no one to call family. If it hadn't been for Eddie Larson, Charlotte wouldn't have learned to drive and she may not had made it to the hospital in time. If it hadn't been for Charlotte, Eddie Larson may not have lived to find love. If not for Izzy, Charlotte would have not returned home. She would not have gotten to know Mr. Church. and She would not have saved Eddie.
This was a fantastic film that I thoroughly enjoyed. Quite possibly the BEST film I've seen since "The Way Way Backl" which caused me to go from detesting Sam Rockwell to finding him to be one of my all time favorite actors.
I watched Mr. Church on Amazon Prime and now I have to go out and buy the movie to add to my collection.
