Review of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948) by Eric R — 04 Feb 2011
Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House opens in Manhattan, New York, where narration talks about the concrete jungle, the amount of people, and the hustle and bustle of the big city. We are introduced to Mr.
and Mrs. Blandings who live in a small apartment in Manhattan. The opening scene is really well done, as we watch them go through their morning routine, we notice the mounting frustration across Mr. Blandings as there just isnt enough room in their apartment to move around comfortably.
One day at work Mr Blandings comes across an advertisement for real estate in Conneticut, and on his gut reaction, him and his wife start to built their dream home. Their Lawyer advises the couple to slow down and think, but once Mr.
Blandings gets attached to something, he goes all out. What ensues is a very fun, witty comedy as the couple go through the financial problems, communication problems, and just family issues which can arise when building their own home.
Cary Grant and Myrna Loy are really perfect as the couple; they both bring a lot of charm and comedy to the roles. Its really a comedy of errors which does have a moral/lession at the end of the film which resonates pretty well.
If your wondering, yea this what THE MONEY PIT was based off of.
