Review of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948) by Matthew J — 26 Aug 2011
Moving to a new house you just bought?,love the country?,love headaches? This movie is about just that -HEADACHES - from a truly hellish house that will eat your money. Cary Grant and Myrna Loy star in this film(there last together) as a married couple who decide to exit the big city for some farm fresh air and peace with there two kids - they buy a house that looks rundown and decide to fix it up and the budget goes up,up,up & away! The third wheel of the film is there lawyer friend played by Melvyn Douglas who to me just did not fit into this movie as the old flame of the Myrna Loy character, there was a small subplot of did they or didn't they ever do anything back in the day which I felt was just out of place, otherwise the film was great.
,setting acting and dialogue were all snappy and charming as was the finished house. See this film along with 'Money Pit' before you decide to buy a house to fix up.
