Review of MouseHunt (1997) by Jeff M — 27 Jul 2008
Two brothers (Nathan Lane and Lee Evans) inherit their father's string factory, as well as his dilapidated mansion, which they soon discover is more expensive than the current listed price. They also discover a tenant that quickly becomes unwanted -- a mouse.
What ensues is a bunch of slapstick comedic scenes of the two brothers becoming victims of circumstance as they try to destroy the mouse.
Lane and Evans work well as the brothers, and play off one another quite nicely. Their comedic timing is near perfect, especially when going after the mouse.
It is hard to believe that in many shots, the mouse is actually computer generated. It is very realistic CGI in my opinion.
The slapstick comedy goes a bit overboard in this film. However, the target audience is children, so they will laugh more than the adults. But, the human actors who interact with the mouse make the scenes pretty fun.
Christopher Walkens is obviously playing the role he has just like the other roles he has done in his career -- though a bit exaggerate when dealing with the mouse. His scene with the mouse should have been a bit longer in my opinion.
They spent a good deal of time and effort blending the real mouse used in this movie with the CGI one. However, the cat the brothers bring home to catch their nemesis looks pretty fake.
There are some interesting camera shots following the mouse in the walls of the house, one of which gives the viewers a mouse-eye view. There are a few comedic bits with the mouse while inside the wall, but they give the viewer a bit of a breather from laughing.
Many of the supporting cast are just there to advance scenes, and nothing else. They have little to no development.
I have to admit, I knew from the previews of the movie that it was targeted to kids, but I did find myself laughing at many of the incidents on the screen.
Overall, this is a pretty goofy movie for children to enjoy, with some funny moments for adults. It could be a pretty good rental to take a look at.
