Review of Moulin Rouge! (2001) by Polishgmr — 15 Jun 2019
Moulin Rouge attempts to be the traditional Luhrmann "style over substance" film. Unfortunately, the style is painful, rampant flashing lights and fast edits which cause me to become nauseous.
It feels like Luhrmann confused style with doing as much as possible on the screen at once. And oddly, the film often decides to highlight the garbage it considers a plot and is all the worse for it.
Neither the style nor substance are interesting. As such, the film holds no interest for me and often , I find myself in heated debates with those who enjoy it. I find the pop songs don't fit and are a pathetic attempt to seem more artistic than the mess of plot and attemtps at characterisation are.
