Review of Moulin Rouge! (2001) by Peter E — 14 Jul 2013
I've always had a good viewing experience with Moulin Rouge!; Baz Luhrmann's wholly original, overblown, yet emotionally driven musical opus. It pulls from Shakespeare, contemporary music, even other films (in a respectable manner), while using classical film techniques, MTV-style editing, and the power of the Hollywood 'Star" (Nicole Kidman).
It's not perfect (can't stand the "Like a Virgin" scene) and it really takes a while for the film to take shape (about 40 minutes) but put simply, Moulin Rouge! utilizes all the tools of filmmaking to make a definitive "movie" that perfectly captures the capabilities of the medium.
