Review of Mouchette (1967) by Donovan D — 30 Aug 2007
While Bresson has a tendency to make films that border on (or even cross the border into) egotistical pretentiousness, Mouchette is a film so startling and absolutely tragic that it rises above his shortcomings, and is quite likely the best of the Bresson films I have seen.
Amazingly, the child actress Nadine Nortier is possibly the most conventionally convincing actress in all the Bresson films I've seen, and that's possibly what makes it all that more powerful.
