Review of Motherhood (2009) by Janson S — 15 Jun 2010
This movie took a beating because of the lackluster box office performance both in England and stateside. It made 9 pounds or something on a single day in England -- which is pretty horrific. I can safely say that the movie isn't THAT bad; but I honestly do not see the point of it having to be made either.
Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill) does fine in the lead role and I actually feel some sympathy towards the overwrought mother; but I can also see that she has a pretty blessed life and could be content with what she has been given.
Sorry -- that's parenthood ... and haven't we all learned this by now? The movie will be hard to relate to any who doesn't live in NYC as we don't understand the city's dynamic and hectic pace and rush and urgency of keeping a parking spot (why have a car if you aren't going to drive it?).
And also ... why on earth would anybody want to watch a movie (which is supposed to be escapist?!) about the hassles of motherhood when people experience them everyday? Movies like this can only appeal to those Hollywood-types who don't live in the "real world" and they think it'd be fun and quaint to play a role like this.
ER's Anthony Edwards plays Thurman's husband (who must have a very nice job) and Minnie Driver (the Russian lounge chanteuse in Goldeneye, Circle of Friends & the tear-producer of Good Will Hunting) plays her pregnant, best friend.
The problem of this movie is that by trying to strike a chord with a widespread audience they are at the same time pandering and putting down. There isn't much more to say because m/Motherhood isn't entertainment .
