Review of Mother India (1957) by Malik A — 04 Jul 2010
A three-hour musical epic about one woman's cross-generational struggle to keep her family and farm together despite innumerable hardships. it's 'gone with the wind' meets 'oklahoma' (with a dash of 'mother courage') as done by bollywood.
beautiful color cinematography. the acting style is mannered, yet deeply emotionally committed, and features hilariously real child performances. a classic bollywood film, though the 'apu trilogy' still ranks as my favorite.
