Review of Mother and Child (2009) by Sandy K — 19 May 2011
A touching look at the intersecting lives surrounding adoption -- the painful legacies of loss, regret and abandonment of one mother-daughter, alongside the story of a infertile woman desperately trying to adopt a baby.
The only weak point was the love interest between Karen (Annette Bening) and Paco (Jimmy Smits): Karen was such a prickly, unpleasant person that it was hard to understand his persistent interest in her.
But I enjoyed the way the various story threads were drawn together. Normally I'm a sucker for a happy ending, but I felt the balance between joy and tragedy was just right here. It felt all too human.
.. and real.
