You shouldn't have to know the ins-and-outs of the Bible to watch and enjoy a movie. Without knowledge of the particular passages that Aronofsky depicts in the film, the movie will make no sense to the viewer whatsoever.
It's literally a prerequisite to watching this film. And even if you do know the ins and outs of the Bible, it still doesn't mean that the audience will put it all together in their head -- which again -- only leaves people wondering what they just watched.
If the majority of the audience walks away disliking the movie because they don't understand the point of the film then the filmmaker has done a terrible job.
