Review of mother! (2017) by Ed T — 14 Sep 2017
Mother! will not just be probably the most talked about movie of the year, decade, and then some... it's also the most polarizing. When the film ended my theater had people arguing with each other, friends and strangers.
"That was the most pretentious student film ever." "I almost walked out." "Worst movie ever made." "What did I just watch?" "So those characters were Cain and Able?" "Wow, just wow.
" "That was by far one of the best movies I've ever seen." There is a wide spectrum of interpretation to this allegorical Art House film. Anyone expecting a Hollywood home invasion film will be disappointed and confused.
This film is meticulously crafted. Even the font for the film has meaning. Almost every scene has a metaphor. The bombastic second half where absolute insanity breaks lose has so much imagery (and one of the best takes on how evil religions can become in the wrong hands) that I'm still trying to dissect everything that happened.
Jennifer Lawrence should earn her 5th nomination for this film and if mother! gets a best picture nod it will be the most contested decision by the academy. But it should because this film achieves what it set to out to do.
.. make people talk and illicit a reaction for years to come.
