Review of mother! (2017) by Michael A — 17 Sep 2017
Once again Aranofsky's utter lack of subtlety with religious allegory totally works. It makes sense that audiences are polarized by this; the anxiety he was trying to tap into (that he nailed in my opinion) was largely based on the absurdity of what was going on, or the total confusion about what is going to happen next. It makes sense that certain people would find the absurdity funny if it wasn't tapping into that anxiety.
The finale went too far and Aronofsky would have benefited from some subtlety there. It was horrifying, but could have been just as if not more horrifying while not being so graphic. It came off as cheap.
