Review of mother! (2017) by Ezequiel M — 03 Oct 2018
I've never seen a Darren Aronofsky film up to this point, and having seen this I am truly stunned. Some may argue that this film may be thematic in a sense while others may argue that it indulges in all its pretentious artsiness, but I'm more inclined to agree with the former.
This isn't the kind of film you watch and expect a coherent structure, tons of exposition or straightforward narrative. This film uses the very medium it exists in to its advantage, providing 2 hours of subtly serving as an allegory of sorts while dishing out as many key elements and imagery to help the viewer draw various conclusions and interpretations.
Whatever the case may be, Mother! has truly surprised me and leaves me wanting to find out more. If this is what it's like to watch a film from a director of this caliber, then I can only imagine what the rest of his filmography has in store.
